When They Operated on Papa...

I've got a three way cross-blog bonanza going on. Each of blogs features a Texas artist on the Imperial label with sounds lifted straight from 78. So enjoy a heap of Texas hillbilly and then head on over to Diggin' It!!! and LoneStarStomp for more...

JIMMIE HEAP AND THE MELODY MASTERS - When They Operated on Papa They Opened Mama's Male (Imperial 8105)

I've long loved Taylor boy Jimmie Heap and his Melody Masters. For a long, long time that crew ruled the rural central Texas roost playing up and down the highways, from jamborees to schoolhouses. The guys were everywhere giving people a reason to dance, drink, and yell cuttin' a whole slew of records on Imperial, Capitol, and Fame along the way. The waltzed, swung, jived, boogied, and even rock n' rolled a bit.

"When They Operated On Papa..." is a fund number that starts in as a boogie... reminds me of a bus for whatever reason. Fine breaks and fine Perk Williams vocal as usual. Ol' Perk had a lazed quality about his delivery... never in a hurry... just throwing it on out there.

Check in at Diggin' It!!! where I've got another Imperial 78 up... Dallas blues man Lil' Son Jackson. And over at my West Texas LoneStarStomp it's a couple of low down numbers from Wichita Falls boy, Bill Mack.

  1. Good idea to link these posts together. I actually didn't know about this blog, only the other two.

    Thanks for the beautiful rips.

  2. Well, you've made my day -- Jimmy (spelled with a "Y" on everything I have) Heap & the Melody Masters are one of my all-time favorite groups. I've known this intriguing song title but never could find the record. So thanks for posting! Ranks right up there with their "Ethyl in My Gas Tank (No Gal in My Arms)"
